Watch this stunning video from a recent Cocos Island Research Expedition to track and study the movements of endangered sharks and sea turtles in order to create a science-based protected marine 'swimway' for them. Sea turtles are captured (under permits from Cocos Island National Park) and tagged so we can understand their movements within the marine protected area and on their migrations. This information will help inform the Park’s management policy to determine if the current protected area is large enough for resident turtles. Understanding the migratory paths of these turtles is also helping us to promote protected “swimways” to ensure the safe passage of turtles between their nesting and foraging areas. Unless one has secured a research permit, it is illegal to touch, harass or bother a sea turtle.
